Vatsala Goel is a cinematographer splitting time between Los Angeles, San Francisco and Mumbai.
She has shot several feature films, shorts, television & web series in both fiction and documentary genres. Her films have been screened by juries at Cinequest, Mill Valley Film Festival, Cine+Mas SF Latino Film Festival, IFFLA, Albany Film Festival, “India Story” programming at MAMI, MIFF, “Viewing Room” list NFDC Film Bazaar, IFFI (Goa), NCPA, IDSSF (Kerela), Claremont-Ferrand (France), Bollywood and Beyond (Germany), Indian Film Festival (Houston) amongst others.
She has consulted for the Youtube channel Bong Eats (300K+ subscribers), being instrumental in reshaping the look and feel of their videos. More recently she has shot for Netflix, Tribeca Studios and worked with Emmy nominated and Guggenheim awarded directors on feature length projects. In October 2018, a PSA she shot in the wake of the Kavanaugh hearings was featured on ABC News Network.
Subjects she has worked on include genealogy, immigration, reform in prison policies and social rehabilitation of former convicts, food industry, art for justice, public school education and dissolution of aboriginal communities in the dense jungles of central India.
Vatsala is currently seeking projects exploring themes in politics shaping public policy, health & wellness, the environment and wildlife.
She graduated with an MFA in cinematography from one of the oldest and most competetive film schools in the world - FTII Pune, a B. A. in english literature, film studies and journalism from St. Xavier’s College at Calcutta University, and has lectured as adjunct professor of cinematography at the School of Cinema, San Francisco State University.
She is currently directing "Home is Here" a short film about the quirks of finding lasting friendships in San Francisco. She is also developing the episodic documentary film series "Creative Couples", exploring the journey of creative & entrepreneurial partners who make art together.
Outside her film practice she pursues photographic printmaking and illustration. She draws inspiration from nature, art, photography and music. Even though she grew up in Kolkata, Mumbai and San Francisco Bay Area feel more like home. She has always lived close to the ocean and makes a fantastic cup of chai.
